Well we recently did a wee trip to the bay as part of what was supposed to be Amanda an I’s big trip down south. hmmm … anyway twas coool.

The pictures are here :

The bay!

heres a taste:

I did quite a bit of top roping (no leading infact:) but climbed some harder stuff which was cool. We met and excellent guy Danny who is in the picutre above leading a 23 so he led up a lot of stuff and i followed:)

The guidebook to get is “Whanganui Rock” by len gillman. Theres also a website:

Whanganui Bay@climb.co.nz which has a picture the same as mine of Tibia on it!:)

Routes (in order of climbing – all on a tope rope im afraid):
Day1 (The Plateau):

Forever Tuesday Morning 17 22m

Sporting Gesture 17 15m

Miracle Of Fluid Dynamics 23 18m – well i climbed up to the first bolt:) Danny led it twice

A Change Of Tune 18 18m the climbing nightmare – just keeps getting steeper and with the holds getting smaller – fell off a couple of times

Day 2 (Whekenui):

Blind Paratroopers 18 8m nice balancy thing

Wet Dreams 19 8m fell of a couple times – wet crack!

Tibia 16 50m dont stop bridging!!

Pitch 1 22m with the surprising cave!

Pitch 2 9m Danny led through this one

Pitch 3 18m hmm.. looked daunting from the safe belay stance!

Day 3 (Sunshine Buttress):

Unnamed thing on the right 14 9m

Playing on midsection 15 10m

Playing near the arrete 15 10m

Sunshine Butresss was a nice relaxing day after the climbing the day before. Needless to say Danny had left by then. Amanda also climbed the 15 in her tramping boots which was pretty funny – infact i think she climbed harder in them than in rock shoes… wierd.

We also met Mere who is the caretaker of the bay for the Marae there who is lovelly and mentioned that she had been visited by the “Iraelites” (Danny and his girlfriend Shelly are from Isreal).

Good work. Returning home on sat night in time to do some college work on sunday. Amanda and Dave headed off to Titahi bay for more climbing (addicts).
